Science & Origin of Kambaba Jasper

Kambaba Jasper, also known as Kambaba Stone or Green Stromatolite Jasper, is an extremely old stone dating back to 3 billion years ago. The green and black swirling color pattern can have many experienced crystal collectors confusing this stone with Malachite or Nebula Stone. Kambaba Jasper is actually not a Jasper, but rather a fossil. This stone is classified as a stromatolite, which refers to the clump of fossilized algae that created this mineral. One of the special fossils within Kambaba Jasper is actually Cyanobacteria, which is believed to have helped create the first oxygen atmosphere here on earth many moons ago. Other minerals within this special combination of stones are usually Quartz, Feldspar, Cristobalite, and Albite. The exact discovery date and locality of this stone is unknown, however it can be found in South Africa, Madagascar, and the small sea in which divides the two. The origin of the stone’s name is also heavily debated, with the leading theory suggesting Kambaba Jasper was named after Cheitharol Kambaba. Cheitharol Kambaba is the court chronicle of the kings of Manipur, India and has been around for thousands of years.

There is a common misconception between Kambaba Jasper and Nebula Stone, with many dealers on the market even selling Kambaba Jasper AS Nebula Stone. Both of these minerals couldn’t be more different than one another! For starters, Nebula Stone has the same color combination, just reversed. Instead of primarily green with black “eyes” and swirling patterns throughout, Nebula stone is mainly black with tiny green “eyes” spotted throughout. When it comes to chemistry, both these stones are made up of completely different minerals. As stated above, Kambaba Jasper is mainly Quartz and Feldspar with other tiny mineral inclusions. Nebula Stone on the other hand is made up of Aegirine, Potassium Feldspar, Zircon, Arfvedsonite, Riebeckite, and Orthoclase. Lastly, Nebula Stone is much more valuable and precious than it’s Jasper “twin”. The locality of Nebula Stone is proprietary and is still kept secret within the family who discovered it. This drives the price of the stone up considerably, which also leads to the mis-labeling of Kambaba Jasper as Nebula Stone. When trying to purchase either of these stones, it’s important to know who your buying from and the authenticity of the stones you’re interested in purchasing.
